O'Neil tried out for Season 3 of Canadian Idol in the early year of 2005, while in high school. The singer made it through to the top hundred round after the judges praised her voice. O'Neil was given high praise by the judges but suffered significant losses in the Top 10 weeks as well as the Top 9 of the Finals in which she was relegated to the bottom 3 and bottom 2 in both cases. The judges were astonished by the outcome and urged the audience to support contestants with strong singing talents, like Melissa. O'Neil's performance was so impressive that she never placed in the third place in the future. O'Neil's two further performances of September 7, 2005, when O'Neil made it to the top two spots in the competition's contest, Werner reportedly forecast that morning papers would cover O'Neil's win over Rex Goudie in the finals. She became her third Canadian Idol and first female winner. O'Neil received a phone call shortly after her win from Canadian Premier Paul Martin, congratulating on her victory on Canadian Idol.
